SOUTHEASTERN EUROPEAN REGION
Bucharest, October 21st, 2000
The Department of Computer Science
and Engineering from the “Politehnica” University of Bucharest had the honour
to organize the 2000-2001 ACM Southeastern European Regional Programming
Contest.
There were 45 programming teams registered, from Bulgaria, Greece,
Macedonia, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia.
The first place was awarded to:

Alexandru Andoni
Valeriu Iorga - coach
from the
POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest 2, Romania, with 5 problems solved
and a penalty of 924 points.
The second place was awarded to:
Nickolay Nickolov
Panayot Dobrikov
Preslav Nakov
Stanislav Ovcharov - coach
from
the Sofia University “St Kliment Ohrinski” , Bulgaria with 3 problems solved
and a penalty of 515 points.

The teams were required to solve 8 programming
problems in 5 hours using one of C or Pascal programming languages. There were
1 team with 5 solved problems, 4 teams with 3 solved problems, 4 teams with 2
solved problems. Most of the teams only solved 1 problem. We consider that the
set of problems was difficult enough.
The computers the contest was run on
were IBM-PCs Pentium III, 64 MB RAM, 733MHz, 10.2 GB HDD, interconnected
through a network and running Windows 2000. They were provided by FORTE
Computers, Sysco ltd., MB Distribution.
The site of the contest was the main hall of the
"Rectorat" building, Politehnica University.
The evaluation of the results and
the scoring were based on the Personal Computer Programming Contest program (PC2)
v7.4, developed at the Computer Science Department, Sacramento, California
State University. The use of PC2 allowed a smooth run of the contest
and facilitated the activity of judges and runners.
The 45 teams totalled a number of
135 students. There were more than 40 staff members and more than 51 volunteers
who contributed to the organization and run of the contest.
Each member of the
participating teams received prizes consisting of software kits of Visual Age
for Java 3.02, VisualAge C++ Professional 4.0, Visual Age for Java 3.0 &
Programming JavaBean. The first three teams received presents from IBM.
All participants will be offered a free 1
year ACM Student Membership.
